The second weekend of December is the biggest holiday weekend of the year in Morehead City. The hometown Christmas parade fills Arendell Street on Saturday morning, and the Gingerbread Festival runs all weekend at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. If you’re going to pick one weekend for a coastal Christmas getaway, this is it.
Morehead City Christmas Parade
When: Saturday, December 12, 2026, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Along Arendell Street in Morehead City
The Morehead City Christmas Parade is a long-running local tradition and one of the biggest holiday parades on the Crystal Coast. Recent parades have featured well over a hundred groups: high school marching bands, floats, scouts, first responders, decorated boats on trailers and, of course, Santa at the end. The route has traditionally run along Arendell Street toward downtown, and thousands of spectators line the sidewalks.
Parade-day tips
- Get there early. Grab a spot on Arendell Street before 11 a.m., especially if you have kids who want a front-row view.
- Bring chairs and layers. December mornings on the coast can start chilly and warm up by noon.
- Plan for road closures. Arendell Street closes for the parade, so driving across downtown gets tricky. Staying downtown means you can simply walk out the door.
- Make lunch plans. Restaurants fill up right after the parade. Book ahead or head a few blocks to the waterfront.
Gingerbread Festival
When: Friday, December 11, through Sunday, December 13, 2026
Where: Crystal Coast Civic Center, Morehead City
The Gingerbread Festival is the signature fundraiser for the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House. The weekend traditionally opens with a ticketed preview party on Friday night, then opens to the public on Saturday and Sunday. Expect:
- A gingerbread house competition, with creations from local bakers, families and businesses
- Crab pot Christmas trees decorated by local sponsors (a uniquely Crystal Coast touch)
- Kids’ holiday crafts and live seasonal music
- A sweet shop, baked goods and photos with Santa
Public admission has traditionally been free, with donations welcome. Every dollar supports hospice care for families in Carteret County.
A sample weekend

- Saturday: Coffee, then the Christmas parade at 11. Lunch downtown, then an afternoon at the Gingerbread Festival.
- Sunday: Brunch, a last look at the gingerbread houses, and holiday shopping on Arendell and Evans Streets before heading home.
