Local Events · Downtown Morehead City

December is one of the coziest times to visit downtown Morehead City. The waterfront is quiet, the shops on Arendell and Evans Streets are dressed for the season, and nearly every weekend brings something to do: a tree lighting, a parade of lighted boats, a hometown Christmas parade and a gingerbread festival that has become a local tradition. Here’s our guide to the 2026 holiday season, from the team that lives and works downtown.

Christmas Tree Lighting at Katherine Davis Park

The season officially starts with the Town of Morehead City’s tree lighting in Katherine Davis Park, at 601 Arendell Street between 6th and 7th Streets. It’s held on the first Friday evening in December (this year, Friday, December 4, 2026), and it’s a true small-town gathering: music, games, hot chocolate, photos in front of the tree and, if you’re lucky, a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The mayor lights the tree, and kids are encouraged to wear their Christmas best.

Tip: Katherine Davis Park is a short walk from our downtown rentals, so you can skip the parking hunt and stroll over with a cup of coffee.

Chowder & Cheer and the Holiday Flotilla: Saturday, December 5

The first Saturday of December is one of downtown’s favorite days. In the afternoon, Chowder & Cheer sends ticket holders from one downtown restaurant and shop to the next, sampling chowder and holiday “cheer” and voting for their favorites. Tickets are sold in person and sell out quickly. Then, as it gets dark on Saturday, December 5, 2026, the Holiday Flotilla parades boats strung with lights along the Morehead City and Beaufort waterfronts. Find a spot along Shepard Street and watch the boats glow across the harbor.

Morehead City Christmas Parade: Saturday, December 12

The Morehead City Christmas Parade is set for Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s one of the biggest holiday parades on the Crystal Coast, with high school marching bands, floats, decorated boats on trailers and more than a hundred groups making their way along Arendell Street. Thousands of people line the route, so arrive early. We’ve written a full guide to the Christmas parade and Gingerbread Festival weekend.

Gingerbread Festival: December 11–13

The same weekend, the Gingerbread Festival returns to the Crystal Coast Civic Center from December 11 to 13, 2026. It’s the main fundraiser for the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House, with a gingerbread house competition, crab pot Christmas trees decorated by local sponsors, kids’ crafts, a sweet shop and visits with Santa. Public admission has traditionally been free, with donations welcome.

Where to eat between events

Holiday weekends are a great excuse for a long dinner on the waterfront. Our favorites include Mar, Red Fish Grill, Catch 109 and Southern Salt, all within walking distance of the tree, the flotilla and the parade route. See our full list of the best restaurants in downtown Morehead City.

Stay downtown for the holidays

December is a quieter, more relaxed time on the Crystal Coast, which makes it a great time to visit. Our condos at Bask and our Lofts at Big Rock Landing put you within a few blocks of every downtown event, so you can walk to the tree lighting, watch the flotilla from the waterfront and be back inside before the parade crowds head home.
