LOCAL GUIDE · THINGS TO DO

Things to do in downtown Morehead City

Walk the waterfront, fish the Gulf Stream, browse Arendell Street and catch a sunset over Bogue Sound — downtown Morehead City is made for exploring on foot.

On the waterfront

Walk the waterfront boardwalk

Downtown along Bogue Sound · Free

The boardwalk runs along the western edge of downtown, past the charter fishing docks, a dive center and waterfront restaurants. Look for the King Neptune statue by the docks, and come back in the early evening for sunset over Bogue Sound. Jaycee Park is an easy place to start.

See the Big Rock marlin

Shepard St, across from Big Rock Landing

The 17-foot marlin fountain honors Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament winners and is the best-known piece of the Morehead City Fish Walk, a trail of fishing-themed public art around downtown. Our Lofts at Big Rock Landing are right here — the best seat in town for Big Rock week.

Book a fishing charter

Morehead City docks

Charter boats run inshore trips in Bogue Sound and offshore trips toward the Gulf Stream. Book a few days ahead in summer — and well ahead for Big Rock week in June.

Paddle or boat to Sugarloaf Island

47-acre island just off downtown

Sugarloaf Island sits in Bogue Sound directly across from the downtown waterfront and is reachable only by boat, kayak or paddleboard. It’s also the best seat in town for the Fourth of July fireworks.

Around downtown

Shop Arendell Street

Downtown’s main street

Boutiques, antiques and local shops line Arendell Street — including Dee Gee’s Gifts & Books (open since 1934), Seaport Antique Market, Ginny Gordon’s kitchen shop and Sugarloaf Island Bakery. Stop at Parson’s General Store, set in a 19th-century home, for local goods and ice cream on the porch.

Carteret County Historical Museum

Arendell St · Small admission fee

A small, well-done local history museum covering the Big Rock Tournament, the railroad that built Morehead City, and local military history, with a research library on site. Check current hours before you go.

Parks and playgrounds

Within walking distance of downtown

Kids love the splash pad and playground at Shevans Park and the pirate-ship playground at Depot Park. For a quieter walk, the Calico Creek Boardwalk runs a little over a mile beside historic Bay View Cemetery.

Easy day trips

Wild horses and Cape Lookout

Boat tours from Morehead City · Ferries from Beaufort & Harkers Island

See the wild horses of Shackleford Banks and the diamond-patterned Cape Lookout Lighthouse at Cape Lookout National Seashore. Boat tours leave from the Morehead City docks, and passenger ferries run from Beaufort and Harkers Island, a short drive away.

Fort Macon and the NC Aquarium

Atlantic Beach & Pine Knoll Shores

Just across the bridge on Bogue Banks, Fort Macon State Park pairs a restored 1830s brick fort with a beach, and the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is a great rainy-day pick.
