Got a weekend? Here’s how we’d spend 48 hours in downtown Morehead City. Almost everything is walkable from our downtown rentals, with one quick drive across the bridge.
Friday evening: settle in on the waterfront
- Check in downtown and drop the car. You won’t need it much.
- Walk the Shepard Street waterfront at sunset, past the charter boats and Jaycee Park to the 17-foot Big Rock marlin fountain.
- Dinner on Evans Street. Start the weekend with seafood or a steak at one of our favorite downtown restaurants.
Saturday: on the water
Morning
- Coffee and a stroll along Arendell Street’s shops.
- Get out on Bogue Sound. In season, take the ferry from Shepard Street to Sand Dollar Island for shelling, or rent a kayak or paddleboard and cross to Sugarloaf Island. See our boat tours and Sugarloaf Island guides.
Afternoon
- Lunch on the water, then visit the Carteret County Historical Museum on Arendell Street to learn about the Big Rock, the railroad that built Morehead City and local history.
- Or head to the beach. Atlantic Beach is a short drive across the bridge.
Evening
- Sunset dolphin cruise (in season) or a sunset drink on the waterfront.
- A long dinner downtown, then a nightcap within walking distance of your rental.
Sunday: history and the beach
- Brunch downtown.
- Fort Macon State Park, about 10 minutes away in Atlantic Beach. Tour the restored 1830s fort, then walk the beach along Beaufort Inlet. See our Fort Macon guide.
- One last waterfront stroll before heading home.
Adjust for the season
- Summer: add a beach afternoon and book boat tours ahead.
- Fall: catch a king mackerel weigh-in at Big Rock Landing.
- Winter: time your trip with a holiday event. See our events by season.
