If you need a reason for a winter getaway, how about a whole festival devoted to chocolate? The Carolina Chocolate Festival returns to Morehead City February 6–7, 2027, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center, and it’s one of the sweetest weekends of the year on the coast.
What to expect
The Carolina Chocolate Festival has been a Crystal Coast tradition for more than two decades. It’s traditionally held the first weekend of February, with special events leading up to the main festival day. Expect:
- Chocolate vendors and tastings. Past festivals have featured everything from chocolate-covered strawberries and chocolate-covered bacon to chocolate-infused tea, with bakers and confectioners from around the region.
- Treats to take home. Stock up on boxed chocolates, cakes and baked goods (just in time for Valentine’s Day).
- A family-friendly crowd. It’s an easy, fun outing for all ages.
A festival that gives back
The festival is run by a nonprofit, and proceeds go to more than 20 local charities each year. Organizers say the festival has given roughly $700,000 back to the community over its history. Admission has been by donation in recent years, so every visit helps.
Make it a winter weekend
February is a quiet, relaxed time on the Crystal Coast: no crowds, easy parking and restaurants where you don’t need to wait for a table. Pair the festival with:
- Dinner downtown. See our list of the best restaurants in downtown Morehead City.
- A walk on the waterfront and a look at the Big Rock marlin fountain.
- A day trip to Fort Macon State Park or the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, both just across the bridge.

A Valentine’s getaway
The Chocolate Festival falls a week before Valentine’s Day, which makes it a perfect excuse for a couples’ weekend. Our studio-style Lofts at Big Rock Landing sleep two and overlook the waterfront, and our Bask condos are just down the street.
