Every June, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament turns downtown Morehead City into the center of the sport-fishing world. It’s one of the most prestigious billfish tournaments on the East Coast, and you don’t need to own a boat to enjoy it. The best show in town is the weigh-in, and it’s free.
When is the 2027 Big Rock?
The 69th Big Rock is scheduled for June 11–20, 2027, starting with the Keli Wagner Lady Angler Tournament and followed by the main tournament week. Check the official tournament website for the final schedule.
Watching the weigh-ins
Weigh-ins happen at Big Rock Landing on the downtown Morehead City waterfront, and they’re free and open to the public. When a boat radios in a qualifying blue marlin, the waterfront fills up as the crowd waits for the fish to hit the scale.
- Go in the afternoon. Weigh-ins generally start later in the day once lines come out of the water.
- Get there early for a good view, especially toward the end of the week when the leaderboard is on the line.
- Bring water and sun protection. June afternoons on the waterfront are hot.
Tournament week beyond the scales
- Watch the fleet head out and return along the waterfront
- Browse tournament merchandise and soak up the festival atmosphere
- Join the crowds at downtown restaurants and bars, where the day’s catches are the talk of the town
Parking and getting around
Downtown gets very busy during Big Rock week, and parking near the waterfront fills fast. Staying downtown is the easiest way to enjoy it: walk to the weigh-ins and dinner, and leave the car parked all week.
