Just across Beaufort Inlet from Morehead City lies Shackleford Banks, an undeveloped barrier island about 8 miles long and home to roughly 100 wild horses. It’s part of Cape Lookout National Seashore, and it makes one of the best day trips from downtown Morehead City.
About the horses
The horses of Shackleford Banks have roamed the island for generations, grazing in the marshes and dunes. Shackleford is the only island in Cape Lookout National Seashore with wild horses, and the herd is managed to keep it healthy.
How to get there
There are no bridges or roads to Shackleford Banks. You can only get there by boat:
- Passenger ferries from Beaufort. Ferry services on the Beaufort waterfront, a short drive from downtown Morehead City, run trips to the island in season.
- Ferries from Harkers Island. Ferries also run from the Harkers Island Visitor Center area, farther east.
- Boat tours from Morehead City. Some tours from the downtown waterfront pass Shackleford Banks and offer a chance to spot horses from the water. See our boat tours guide.
- Your own boat. Boaters can land on the island’s beaches.
Rules for viewing the horses
- Stay at least 50 feet away. The horses are wild. Give them space for their safety and yours.
- Never feed or pet the horses.
- Keep pets leashed and away from the herd.
What to bring
Shackleford Banks is undeveloped, with only seasonal restrooms and no lifeguards, stores or shade structures. Bring:
- Plenty of water and food
- Sunscreen, hats and bug spray
- Binoculars for horse watching
- A bag for shells (the shelling is excellent) and one for your trash
Make it a Cape Lookout day
With more time, combine Shackleford with a trip to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, with its famous black-and-white diamond pattern, also part of the national seashore and reached by ferry.
