Stand anywhere on the downtown Morehead City waterfront and you’ll see it: a low, green island in Bogue Sound, just across the harbor channel. That’s Sugarloaf Island, a roughly 47-acre undeveloped island that’s open to the public for recreation. It’s one of downtown’s best little adventures.
A protected island
Sugarloaf Island was once slated for development. Instead, the North Carolina Coastal Federation worked with the Town of Morehead City to buy it, keeping it natural for everyone to enjoy. More recently, a restoration project has worked to slow erosion along its shoreline using wave-reducing structures and oyster reefs, a first-of-its-kind approach in North Carolina.
How to get there
Sugarloaf Island is only reachable by water.
- Kayak or paddleboard. The island is a short paddle from the downtown waterfront. Watch for boat traffic in the harbor channel, wear a life jacket and check the wind and tide before you go.
- Your own boat. Boaters often anchor off the island. If you’re bringing a boat to town, see our boat slips guide.
- A boat tour. Boat tours from the downtown waterfront pass Sugarloaf Island on their way out to the sound. See our boat tours guide.
What to do on the island
- Walk the beach and look for shells
- Watch for herons, egrets and other shorebirds
- Picnic with a view back to the downtown skyline
- Catch the sunset over Bogue Sound
What to bring
- Water and snacks (there are no stores or facilities)
- Sunscreen, a hat and bug spray, especially in summer
- Water shoes
- A trash bag: pack out everything you bring in
The view from the mainland
Even if you don’t make it across, Sugarloaf Island gives downtown its signature view. It’s also a front-row seat for the Fourth of July fireworks over the waterfront, a favorite with boaters.
