Morehead City, Atlantic Beach and Beaufort sit within a few miles of one another on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, but each has its own personality. Here’s an honest comparison to help you pick your base. (We’re based in downtown Morehead City, so we’ll admit to a little bias, but every town here is worth a visit.)
Morehead City: the working waterfront
Morehead City is the Crystal Coast’s hub, with a real downtown on Bogue Sound, a working port, charter fleets and some of the area’s best restaurants.
- Best for: walkable dining, fishing and boating, couples, tournament anglers and anyone who wants to be central.
- Highlights: the Shepard Street waterfront, Big Rock Landing and the marlin fountain, Sugarloaf Island, and events like the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and the NC Seafood Festival.
- Trade-off: you’ll drive a few minutes across the bridge to the ocean beach.
Atlantic Beach: classic beach town
Just across the bridge on Bogue Banks, Atlantic Beach is the place for sand between your toes.
- Best for: families who want to walk to the ocean, surfers and beach-all-day trips.
- Highlights: ocean beaches, Fort Macon State Park and the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores nearby.
- Trade-off: more seasonal, and many restaurants and shops are spread out along the highway rather than in a walkable downtown.
Beaufort: historic and charming
Across the Newport River, Beaufort is one of North Carolina’s oldest towns, known for its historic homes and a picturesque Front Street waterfront.
- Best for: history lovers, sailors and anyone who wants a postcard-pretty small town.
- Highlights: the NC Maritime Museum, the historic district and ferries to Shackleford Banks and its wild horses.
- Trade-off: smaller and often busier in peak season, with a short drive to the ocean beach.
The case for staying in Morehead City
Downtown Morehead City sits in the middle of it all. Atlantic Beach is a short drive one way, Beaufort a short drive the other, and you come home each evening to a walkable waterfront with great restaurants. It’s the easiest base for a trip that mixes beach days, boat trips and good dinners.
