LOCAL GUIDE · EVENTS
From Big Rock week in June to the NC Seafood Festival in October and Christmas on the waterfront, here’s what’s happening in downtown Morehead City through the year.
Spring · Downtown Morehead City
A Kentucky Derby–themed afternoon downtown with drink specials, appetizers, photo spots, and best-dressed and best-hat contests judged by local celebrities.
Second week of June · Morehead City waterfront
The biggest week of the year on the Crystal Coast. Boats head offshore after blue marlin, and crowds gather on the waterfront to watch the weigh-ins. Festivities kick off with the release-only Keli Wagner Lady Angler Tournament, and anglers 16 and under compete in the three-day Big Rock Kids Tournament.
Plan ahead: downtown fills up fast this week — see our Big Rock week lodging guide and book early.
July 4 · Over the waterfront
Fireworks over the Morehead City waterfront. For a panoramic view, watch from Sugarloaf Island, just across the water from downtown.
Summer & fall · 5–8 pm · Katherine Davis Park
Free, family-friendly outdoor concerts downtown. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and the kids.
First weekend of October · Downtown Morehead City
One of the state’s biggest celebrations of local seafood, with food from across North Carolina, entertainment and hourly cooking demos in the chef’s tent. Some downtown streets close to traffic for the weekend.
Saturday after Thanksgiving · Downtown shops
A day to shop the locally owned boutiques, galleries and gift shops along Arendell and Evans Streets.
First weekend of December
The holidays start with the town Tree Lighting on the first Friday of December in Katherine Davis Park (between 6th and 7th Streets), with live music, kids’ games, doughnuts and hot chocolate. On the first Saturday afternoon of December comes Chowder & Cheer, a downtown chowder tasting — tickets are sold in advance and sell out quickly — followed by the lighted boat Flotilla after dark. The season also brings the downtown Christmas Parade and the Gingerbread Festival.
New Year’s Eve · Downtown Morehead City
Ring in the new year with the Crab Pot Drop and early fireworks for the kids. (There are no midnight fireworks.)
Dates shift from year to year. Confirm this year’s schedule with the Downtown Morehead City events calendar.
